On DVD: Closer
Closer stars Julia Robert, Clive Owen, Jude Law and Natalie Portman as two couples involved in drama, passion and deceit. Directed by Mike Nichols the film was critically acclaimed and picked up two Golden Globes for supporting acting. However, I thought it was a disappointing movie experience.
The aforementioned couples are all directly involved with each other in the literal sense and none of them apparently have one ounce of resistance in there bodies. For all the acclaim Roberts received in this role I thought her character was weak ( not as weak as Jude Law's though) and evil at her core, not even in a good way. Portman spoke as if she was reading her lines or someone was saying them in her ear right before she said them. At times she was endearing but maybe that was because she was the least miserable character in the movie. Clive Owen should really have done something else instead of this film and that's basically all I can say about him.
I know Mike Nichols is considered a genius and that this movie is considered one of his best. I just didn't find much enjoyment in watching these couples waltz around the screen to the beat of their adulterous hearts. I couldn't get far enough away from Closer.
